Naturalization and Citizenship

What to know about Naturalization and Citizenship!

The laws of the United States allow foreign-born persons to naturalize and become US citizens. Most people may apply to become a US citizen after being a permanent resident (green card-holder) for five years. People who are married to US citizens may apply to naturalize after three years.

Becoming a US citizen is certainly something to aspire to because it allows one to fully participate in one’s adopted country – vote or be voted into office; expanded job opportunities; transmit citizenship to one’s children in certain cases and much more.

The naturalization process can be a very simple one, but it can get complicated if one has certain issues –arrests; unpaid taxes; unpaid child support; failure to register for selective service (men only); long periods of stay outside the US . . . If you have any one of these, you really should have a lawyer.

And there are those who already are US citizens, but do not know it!!!
